Well I figured there was an easy solution and that is the fact that the 2-pistol and 3-pistol (and new 4-ar mag module) are identical except for the foam insert. Well for me this was a huge bummer because I had a module I would have like to put there but no place for it. If you only had rifles and a couple pistols above them you would never know. This space then is basically worthless except where you have your rifles. Which would be no big deal except it’s about 18” short and plenty of space to put another module or two. Got the new modules and was moving things around when I realized, for the first time, that the pegboard that you attach the modules to (the big selling point and whole purpose of this vault) does not go all the way to the bottom. Now here is where Vaultek loses their stars. Well fast forward and I needed more pistol storage so I went to the Vaultek site and now they have 3-pistol modules! Great.

If that was anywhere in the manual I missed it. One day I was moving things around a bit and somehow accidentally discovered that there is a little plastic “shelf” in the bottom of the module and if you lift out the foam and remove that shelf the pistols slide down in that foam perfectly! Would have been nice to know. I was a bit bothered by this but figured they would not fall out so ok. My pistols did not fit down in the module way I thought and were a little wobbly. When I got my vault and put in the modules that came with it along with my extra ones I thought it was good except for one thing. Comes with two of the 2-pistol modules that you can also put AR mags in. One of the accessories was a 2-pistol rack and shelf bundle. I ordered my vault from a local shop where I could pick it up and save shipping and then ordered some accessories from Vaultek. What bothers me may not matter to others. When I first got my RS 500 I would have given it 41/2 stars but now only 2. Went from 4 stars to 2 after owning for a while

I was really just hoping to figure out how to fix it so this resolution is more than fair in my book. EDIT: Customer service made another attempt to resolve the situation and are in the process of sending me a replacement safe. I would not recommend a safe from this company, especially at this price point, when it runs the risk of dying so soon, particularly when the manufacturer no longer supports previous models.

While it’s out of warranty they did make an attempt to help, but unfortunately the final reply was “ We're very sorry but unfortunately, our repair department does not have any more parts from that particular product run.” I actually have 4 of their safes and am now wondering how much longer before the rest go down with no resolution. I have no idea if it’s going to be completely dead every time I go to open it which makes it useless at this point as it is not reliable. Recently the safe stopped holding a charge. The biometric never worked consistently but I didn’t mind that much because it’s easy enough to punch in a number. I’ve had this safe for roughly 4-5 years. The wifi connectivity is a pain to set up, but once it has been set up, it seems to stay connected reliably. Overall, these are fine products, but you can save yourself some money and skip the fingerprint/biometric option. Also, I wish they sold a baseplate for the 800 like they do the 500, but that's not a knock on them it's just an observation.

There's also warnings on it about only using their power adapter, so I'll just have to wait until I get the right cord to actually install it. I've ordered a USB to DC cord that's longer, and it was only like eight bucks, but for two thousand dollars I think they can do better. If the wall plug is on the opposite side of the safe, you have to eat up half of it just to run it behind the safe and after you center the safe on a stud to anchor it, you have about ten inches of cord left.

Also, and this actually is why I'm rating them only 4 stars, the RS power cable is like two and half feet long.

Ultimately I can still pop the code in just as easily, but that's not what I paid for.

I do think they're made well, sturdy, and very attractive safes. That's frustrating given the price on both of these ~$650 for the MXI and ~$2000 for the RS. Overall I'm pleased, but the fingerprint scanner doesn't work consistently on either of them. I bought an RS800i and an MXi at the same time.
